Pension plan amendments

The delegates approved three amendments to the CSS Pension Plan Rules and Regulations.

The first amendment sets out to:

  • Streamline the decumulation processes for persons who must commence a retirement income by the end of the year they turn age 71
  • Support employer members in their satisfying the rights of employees with respect to contributions and periods of protected leaves
  • Permit employees in certain pension jurisdictions to decline enrollment for certain prescribed reasons
  • Establish a common language for full-time and less-than-full time employees
  • Ensure continued compliance with application pension law related to the definition of spouse, eligibility rules and locking-in rules

The second and third amendments are dependent on the extent to which applicable pension legislation permits the benefits. As such, these amendments will not take effect until the pension provisions in certain pension jurisdictions are updated. In summary, these two Plan amendments:

  • Establish the framework required for the CSS Pension Plan to be able to provide variable pension life annuities
  • Establish the framework required for the CSS Pension Plan to permit former plan participants to re-open their pension accounts with the CSS Pension Plan
